CREATE 4.0

Curricular anchoring of digital core competencies - New competency goals for sustainable raw material extraction 4.0

Motivation & Summary

The digital transformation that aligns with Industry 4.0 has a high potential for making the industry more efficient and sustainable. Simultaneously, it also means the continuous creation of new core competencies for students in digital technologies.

This development is also gradually entering the raw materials industry. Due to the volatile raw material markets, the declining deposit contents worldwide, the ever-increasing international competition, and the growing importance of sustainability, the mining industry also is striving for such a digital transformation. Terms like Smart Mines or Mining 4.0 summarize the totality of this movement. As far as the mining industry is concerned, Mining 4.0 means, above all, the further development of automation, monitoring, and more sustainable, selective mining. Core competencies in digitization form the foundation for the successful advancement of the mining industry.

The Create 4.0 project aims to provide future generations of raw materials engineers with the necessary expertise and prepare them for developing and using these novel technologies. In this matter, the contents of the lectures on underground mining and open-pit mining will be adjusted and expanded. Students will gain an overview of all necessary core competencies in digital transformation. These incorporate the Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI), autonomous operating equipment, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and modern wireless communication systems such as 5G. The integration of simulators, digital twins, and a Sensor-Practice-Case-Study into the courses as a central component of the knowledge transfer enables students to apply their knowledge to authentic and realistic systems.
